2008 World Championships of Freestyle Motocross

Who Will Walk Away Victorious This Year?
By Jared Souney

Each year the Action Sports World Tour culminates with the most exciting event of its kind, the LG Action Sports World Championships. The Championships are a big deal - a very big deal - and 2007 was by far the best Championships to date. More than 47 thousand spectators came out to watch the action live over two weekends in Pomona, CA and Dallas, TX. 87 hours of television programming were produced from the Championships, airing on CBS, Fuel, Versus, Spike, and SportsNet.

Southern California is the heart of FMX, so what better place for its World Championships than the LA County Fairgrounds in Pomona? Top riders like Nate Adams, Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg and Todd Potter call the Inland Empire home, so for them Pomona is their backyard. But this is the LG World Championships of FMX, so it can't be all about So Cal.

In 2007 Top riders from all over the globe including Switzerland's Mat Rebaud, Japan's Takayuki Higashino, and Italy's André Villa made the trip to the States to compete for the title of World Champion. After two rounds of head to head elimination, the field was narrowed down to three: Jeremy Stenberg, Mat Rebaud, and four-time defending champion Nate Adams.

With four previous titles under his belt, few people expected anything but another Adams victory. But Twitch Stenberg had other plans. After Adams (incorrectly) thought he had a flat tire and ended his run, the door was wide open for Stenberg, and he took advantage in true Metal Mulisha form. Tossing aside the pain of broken bones in his foot, Twitch threw down big tricks off of every jump, over and over. No handed flips, superman flips, rock solids... he put it all together, and the top spot was his.

For the first time ever there is a name other than Adams on the LG Action Sports World Championship of Freestyle Motocross trophy. You know what they say: pain is temporary, glory is forever! That mantra must have been going through Twitch's mind, and it paid off big.

There's no doubt that the flat-tire incident is ringing on Nate Adams' mind, and he won't be happy with anything but a fifth title in 2008. But Twitch will not back down easily, and has the skills to stand up to Adams any day of the week.

2008 is surely to be a battle unlike anything we've seen before. You won't want to miss the action as 12 of the best riders on the planet battle it out head-to-head! And if that's not enough, multi-platinum recording artsists Filter are set to rock the Maxell music stage at 9pm!
